This Week’s Skies…

Look, up at the sky. There is a light, a beauty up there, that no shadow can touch. – Tolkien
Only from the heart can you touch the sky. – Rumi

Last week was so blazing hot that I hid indoors as much as possible. With this week’s cooler temps, I found my way back outdoors.

And I looked up.

The skies enthralled me. Some mornings I thought I could feel moisture contained in the clouds. The sun, whether silvery and moon-like or butter yellow, gilded the clouds’ edges, rendering others an ominous gray in contrast. The trees, leaves, even a utility pole, transformed into something stately and dramatic in silhouette. At least once the clouds looked like a child had tossed handfuls of downy feathers in the air. One evening the peachy glow of sunset light infiltrating our home enticed me outside to admire the sky.

We can feel small as we look at the vastness of the skies, returning us to a right perspective: our problems, valid and challenging though they may be, are not everything.

The skies also grant us an experience of wonder. No matter how many times we’ve glanced up, the sky always offers something new, a beautiful work of art painted in blue and white, gray and black, orange and pink. Gazing at the sky may invite us to breathe deeper, unclench, rest.

Go ahead … go outside, look up. What will you see in the skies?

I have been in awe of the sunrises and sunsets in our area over the last few days. It’s kinda like God is giving me a reward for being dilignet in what I have been called to do.
